So, while we are on the topic of shopping, I have some thoughts about the upcoming Black Friday. My husband wants to get some huge LCD HDTV television for our bedroom. It sounds cool, but what makes me believe that we should buy one? Or better yet, since we are trying to be frugal and not spend money, what makes me think we can afford it? Well, first off, my husband has found one for half-off on the Black Friday scanned advertisements. Great, right? Well, I have some ideas that will help both of us decide whether or not to make the purchase. Hopefully this will help anyone else pondering a big, expensive, yet really good deal purchase in the future.

First, do you need it? When looking at anything including: clothes, toys, even food, I ask myself if I need it or simply just want it. Am I replacing something that is broken? Do I have something else to substitute? Does something else require this new purchase to operate? Will you have to purchase cords, cables, cabinets, other items to use this new item?

Second, is it really a good deal? Do your research and see if the deal is indeed good. Is the deal name-brand or generic? What kind of reviews has it gotten? Are you excited for the deal or is it exciting because everyone else is excited?

Third, if you need to return it, can you? Check out return policies. Is there a restocking fee? If you order online, is it easy or expensive to return? How long do you have to return it?

Fourth, will you regret not purchasing it? If you think you will, indeed, purchase this item. Will you feel guilty when you look at it? Will it send you further into debt? In our case with the TV, $750 is a great deal, but $750 will still be money we could put into savings if it isn’t spent on electronics. Again, will the purchase give you second thoughts?

Finally, go your gut feeling. If you think you will regret not getting it, then get it. Most times you can always return : ) At least that’s my motto.

Whatever you decide -- Happy shopping – it sounds like my husband will be spending the night in line at Circuit City Thursday night.
